Birding in Castroville, TX

The River House's Back Yard
The River House's Back Yard

Besides the extensive backyard of River House bordering the Medina River, (we've seen hummers, kingfishers, flycatchers, ducks, herons, owls, hawks, buntings, mockingbirds, mourning and white-wing doves, swallows and finches) there are two other great birding spots in Castroville.

The first is the Landmark Inn State Historical Park, a four minute walk from River House. Look for Canyon Wren, Eastern Phoebe, Green Kingfisher, Black Phoebe, hawks and owls near the river by the old mill. Also, hummingbirds and butterflies come to the native plantings on the grounds behind the Landmark.

The other great birding site is the Castroville Regional Park, a five minute drive from River House. This is a great birding place any time of the year. One will encounter many different kinds of habitat on a walk around the perimeter of the park. The pond at the top of the hill on the west may have Osprey and Egrets. The little ditch on the right always has water and usually has Green Kingfisher and warblers. This ditch flows into the Medina River which you follow on around to the left. Couch's Kingbirds have nested in the Pecan trees and Westerns have nested on the power poles. Eastern Bluebirds, Ash-throated and Great-crested Flycatchers, Vermilion Flycatcher, Verdins and Orioles, even an Audubon's may be seen. (This is a beautiful, quiet park with picnic tables by the river.)

Also, see listing for Lost Maples State Natural Area (50 miles) which is open year round and has nesting populations of both Golden-cheeked Warblers and Black-capped Vireos among numerous other species.
